Grades 4-8

 

1. The artist does not mix all of the paint completely and leaves seemingly haphazard dabs of color on the canvas.

2. Renoir, Cézanne and Monet all lived from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.

3. Historically most painters learned from those who preceded them.  For example, the artists of the Renaissance had a great influence on these painters, Renoir especially. Renoir went to study in Italy.  We know this to be true because under some of the artist’s names on this web site are lists of other related artists, who have a similar style.

4. A medium is the type of paint.  Most paintings are done with oil on canvas.

5. This is the name of the person(s) who owns the painting and has loaned it to the museum on a temporary basis for exhibition.

Renoir used rich colors and made use of light and shade to define his compositions, which mostly were portraits.  Monet made use of natural lighting whenever possible and was known for his work on landscapes that often were painted during various times of the day to show the difference between light and shade.

1.    An art critic coined the term when he viewed Monet’s painting entitled Impression Sunrise.

2.    Renoir and Monet are both from the school of Impressionism. Cézanne is known as post-Impressionistic.
